What is the construction and purpose of pistons and piston rings?

Pistons and piston rings are the basic components of the crank-piston assembly working inside engine cylinders. The piston consists of a crown, skirt, ring grooves, and a gudgeon pin seat, while the rings form a sealing and oil-scraping set. Their task is to transfer combustion force, maintain compression, and control the amount of oil on the cylinder bore.

What are pistons and piston rings used for?

Pistons and piston rings are used for the proper operation of the cylinder during every engine cycle. The piston absorbs energy generated in the combustion chamber and transfers it to the connecting rod and crankshaft, while the rings seal the space between the piston and the cylinder. Without their proper operation, the engine loses compression, consumes more oil, and runs less efficiently.

What role does the gudgeon pin play?

The gudgeon pin is the component connecting the piston to the connecting rod. It serves to transfer loads generated during combustion and enables the oscillating movement of the connecting rod relative to the piston. Its diameter, length, and mounting method must be consistent with the design of the piston and connecting rod, as they affect the durability of the entire system.

How to choose pistons and piston rings for a specific engine?

It is safest to compare the OEM number, engine unit designation, fuel type, and working dimensions of the part. The piston diameter, compression height, number and type of rings, and compatibility with the engine version are important. For used parts, it is also worth checking the condition of the grooves, skirt, and working surfaces.

What symptoms indicate wear of pistons or piston rings?

Typical symptoms include power loss, increased oil consumption, exhaust smoke, and uneven engine operation under load. Starting problems, lower compression, and characteristic knocking resulting from excessive clearance in the cylinder may also occur. The final assessment should be based on measurements and inspection after disassembly.

How is the installation of pistons and piston rings performed?

Installation requires maintaining the correct order of the rings, proper positioning of the ring gaps, and checking assembly clearances. Before assembly, the condition of the cylinder, cleanliness of the piston grooves, and compatibility of cooperating elements must be checked. After installation, proper lubrication and the selection of other engine parts compatible with the given unit version are important.
